I used the link popularity tool to check and see how many backlinks I have and Yahoo shows 492 and Google shows 5. What gives? I've used other tools as well and they all calculate different numbers. However, the Yahoo number is closer to being accurate. What's going on with big G? Thanks.
Yeah I made a post about the same thing about a month ago. The consensus was that Google just counts less links it seems. Yahoo was pretty close to my actual figure as well, and I was in a similar situation to you as Google with that number being far less. Sucks.
Google gives a sample of baclinks, whereas Yahoo gives a more complete (but not 100%) picture. If you log your website with Google webmaster tools, you will be able to see all your backlinks. FALSE. GWT does not show all of your inbound links or backlinks. I have over 6,700 links counted by Y! at YSE. Google Webmaster Tools is showing 2,415 of them (about 1/3). The correct answer is: Google Webmaster Tools shows the highest percentage of your total backlinks --- but still only shows a small fraction.
That's where it gets even crazier for me. I have the Google Webmaster tool and it shows NO links in or outbound from my site. I'm not too concerned about that right now. I was just curious. It would be nice the see some numbers to let me know I'm making progress. But I can be patient.
