Anybody has an idea why sometimes there is a huge mismatch between whois data and archive.org? e.g.: whois vs archive.org whois says: Created on: 11-Oct-04 whereas archive.org shows pages from 1998? If the domain was created in 2004, how could there be pages in 1998? I'm confused here. It looks like the domain was killed and then reborn. Does it mean that the domain is 3 year old or 9? I'd imagine 3, since everybody relies on whois data to poll for domain's age.
let me rephrase it again: if a given domain was created in 2004 (as reported by whois), how could archive.org have visited that domain in 1998?
If the domain expired and dropped and was then re-registered in 2004 it would show the 2004 date- even though it was a live website in 1998.
thanks tobycoke, that's what I thought. In which case how old the domain is for SERP purposes? 9 year old or just 3 as with the given example?
yep, it was dropped so when it was re registered it was just like a brand new domain name, so it is only 3 year old domain now
