I have yet to focus my efforts on directory traffic.

Can anyone tell me a little bit about this source of website traffic?:

What directories should I submit to? Free ones or paid ones? Which ones - free or paid - are good traffic generators in your experience?

Which are safe directories to submit to that google and other search engines won't penalize your site for being in?

Well i dont think directories bring any traffic... .well they bring but not directly.... submitting to directories will give you actually tons of backlinks which will increase your weight in search engines... and so search engines will rank you higher for your keywords

You might want to browse DP Link Development Section, there people will tell you why you need backlinks.

No directory listing should cause your site to be penalized. This should not be a concern. Some directories are not what they seem however. Some are dead (ie. not processing free submissions) and some are email harvesters (prepare for lots of spam).

A lot depends upon how much time and money you have to devote to the process. There are lists of SEO friendly directories, so it's fairly easy to find the ones that offer SE benefits. Human traffic is another question though and in my experience, you are not going to find a directory that can be classified as a good traffic generator.

Agree! This is why it's important to get your listing posted as near to the top of a category as you can get it. In some cases, paid positioning will get you there.

Besides all the really good points already mentioned here's another thing.

If you respond to post in the directories area of DP those links will likely show up quite soon (days). Its another story if those pages will be indexed by Google. That might take sometime and thats beyond your control.

If you work your way through one of the available lists of directories (several available) don't expect those links to show up immediately (maybe never). I submitted to a bunch in early September and only about 20% are active.

    Good luck.
