Directory submissions useless?

Are most of them offered under "Services" useless -- I notice I pay but results only come when I do submissions myself.

What is your opinion? What is the best way to achieve a large amount of backlinks?

Do it yourself is always the best way.

    Buy sitewide links.

when you use a paid service they should submit to one of your emails to ensure the quality and actual submissions.

This is wrong that ur say "Directory submissions useless?" u need to get quality seo or services to do that for u. You can also try per day submission services and check ur mail regularly.

We have establish for our manually submission the following rules:

    - email used my be from the same domain or also accessible by our client
    - use only our secure database
    - reports back to client in pdf format with exact where we submitted

I feel you about directory submitters as i have hired loads over time & only a few did submit my sites & to decent directories.

The reason why most of the directory submission services do not work is because they offer 'Manual submission' when in fact they they are using some crap program or script & that script program submits to useless spam type directories, link farms or search engines often to the wrong category or submits the wrong information in the fields, that's why most submitters offer submission to 200+ directories for a few bucks, c'mon who is going to sit there for days doing a tedious job making sure everything is perfect for a few dollars?

At least 3 people i hired did not submit to any directories.

My advice is: Submit to directories yourself or hire someone who charges a fair price for the work involved...

it's completely the opposite of useless. I've had some strong directory submissions for my sites and I've seen the SERPs skyrock because of it.

The directories in my sig are all paid, but not useless to submit to. There are many good free ones out there as well, but those are harder to find. Yes, submitting to most of the new ones won't help, even though some of them will grow into great paid directories and you will be happy that you have submitted. I remember when wow directory came out first and I got a bunch of sites in for free. The point is, that you really never know.

Most directories-owners don't send e-mail back to the site-owner that their site is submitted. So even if the submiiter sends the Excel report, how does site owner verifies?

It may be worth spending a few bucks on directory submissions (buy one month of lazy seo service and you can submit to around 300 directories for $20) but you are better off picking out 15-25 quality directories (even if you have to pay for inclusion) and buying a few text links.

    Good Luck!

    I have exprience both ways.

There is one complete cheat.. Just took my money and did not submit at all + he added my email to some junk guys I just had to abandon that email id.

There are few that did a good job.

So, if you are lucky you get the good one I guess, you need to check their rating and comments from other members etc.

    Thanks
