Directory Submissions - Good For SEO?

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by geester1, Sep 5, 2008.

I would like to know if submission to web directories is good for seo, using this example.

    title (anchor text) computer
    url www.yourdomain.com
    description

changing the anchor text/title to TFT monitor, but keeping the same description and URL

Will this give me good SEO or will I be penalised by Google? I would be using the direcotries to build back links and they would all have PR.

Don't expect to rank in top 10 for competitive keywords by just submitting to directories.
Directories are almost useless nowadays, use them to just diversify your link profile ;)
DMOZ and the Yahoo Directory are good but it's pain to get listed there...

Okay, ask yourself this, if you were Google, and you know how easy it is to pick up 1000, 5000, 10,000 links from free, poor quality directories. How much weight would you give to links from them?

Directory Submission is beneficial when you are going to do submissions in those directories having +2 Page Rank and all the directories must be cached by Google.

The directories are all PR3+, this isn't the only way I get backlinks. I also use blog commenting on relevant blogs, forum commenting on relevant forums and article submission.

In my opinion, directories are THE biggest waste of time u could ever imagine - spending half the time that I did doing submissions on blog commenting has given me at least 500% more growth then from directories, gained me relationships and have gained sitewide links from blogs with PR6 and higher

Do you mean you can't change the anchor text while commenting on blogs or building links in any other way?

Yes... directory submission is the one of the most important process for getting traffic & back links. But choose the right category to your website.

I completely disagree - they are a complete and utter waste of time
If u are gonna do it, pay somebody, because your time can be some much better spent
U probably won't see any results from paying someone either though - pay em to do blog commenting or buy sig links or something

It is good if its from high PR directories. But don't expect jump in rankings, best you can expect is a constant crawl for your site.

Directories can help you in the beginning by getting you some long tail search engine traffic. If your site has good content you'll pick up some links from people visiting your site. That will get you some search engine traffic from better keywords...which will get you more links.

After you're showing up on page 3 or 4 in google for a keyword then you can use web directories to boost those keywords. Use variations of the keywords as your anchor text and you'll see those keywords move up to page 1 or 2. Then of course if you have good content you'll get more links and move up even higher.

They aren't bad for laying a foundation, but don't put a lot of resources into it.
