Directory Submissions - A few questions for the pros

    Hi everyone,

I have a bunch of questions in regards to the best and most successful methods for link submissions.

    1) Do you edit the description of your site every few submissions or is it ok to have the same content for the description field on all directories?
    2) Do you submit your homepage and subpages, I say every 10-15 submissions so you your entire site is indexed as opposed to just the homepage?
    3) Do you submit to anything PR3 and under?
    4) Is it ok to use the same content for article submissions (for eg, copying the content from an ezine article for use on other article sites?)
    5) Are there any automated applications/software or websites to submit links to a bulk of directories?

    Thank You very much!

1-no, but some directory want a description with certain length, then i write more , in the field and not in the description of the site (meta description)
2 - no, only site index, will be added
3 - yes, the reason is , if a link is not good for backlink, is good for link popularity
5 - that is automate submissions, and is not good for your site, but u can use half automate submission softeware like Directory submitter

I think you have already got answers. So I have a few different things to tell since you have talked of using automated submitters.

Although there are some good automated submitters out there, it pays you to be diligent in choosing the directories. Many of the thousands of directories aren't even crawled by the SEs for weeks. This applies to even those with PRs of 3 and more. What use submitting to such directories if they aren't going to be crawled frequently.

Any chance of your links on their sites getting indexed is also quashed if it lies deep down the pages which don't have any PR or not at all indexed by the SEs.
An opposite example of this is submission to ezinearticles which is crawled 5-6 times a day by Google and having one article on its high traffic index page means your backlink is only one level away.

I would prefer submitting articles or my site based on traffic. More the traffic more frequent will be Google crawls.

    Thanks for the replies palme/Alevoor

I will test out the auto submission software from palme. Alevoor, do you also have any other suggestions for auto submitters? How can I track and pin point good directories which I should submit to? I notice many ppl posting directories on here but other than the PR of the directory, what other methods can I use on determining which one is being crawled the most frequent and which one has the most traffic? I would love to know this b/c I have spent many many hrs and days submitting to directories already and I may have just wasted a heck of a lot of time.

Also, anyone know if it's ok to use the same content for article submissions (for eg, copying the content from an ezine article for use on other article sites?)

Last question, how long does it take for google to update the link: feature? I have a few backlinks already created on other sites but the command link:www.mysite.com is giving me 0 results.

    Thanks again

google doesnt show you all your backlinks and rarely show them from directories, use a link checker like http://www.backlinkwatch.com/ or check your backlinks in yahoo

personally i dont usually submit to more than 10 quality directories anymore
the site may be PR3+ but your link is on a page with no pr usually

Submit to DMOZ and Yahoo Directory. Submitting to thousands of directories won't help you at all, so don't waste your time.

thanks pixeladd for the link and tips.
zexy, I have submitted to dmoz and yahoo dir already. I have also already submitted to about 20+ PR4+ directories manually. matrix, I never knew about that forum, i'll check it out. I'm probably going to create a new thread in seo which ties this into other things im doing so we'll just let this die down.
I think I may have to give the sites more time. I did a lot of link building and my sites are still ranked terribly and only getting 20-30 uniq/day.

It is perfectly O.K. to send your same content to multiple directories including articles. The more the better.

Thank you for your reply. You will actually want to check the sites' Alexa standing and traffic separately. I use http://www.trafficestimate.com/ as it gives a fair enough idea of a site's traffic status, although this deals only with the index page.

So to summarize, I go by the thumb rule of
    1. Alexa ranking
    2. Traffic estimate
    3. Pagerank
    4. Backlinks
before submitting site or exchanging links at any level.

    Hope this helps.

Yes, it's a good idea but it takes ages to see your links on these (at least on DMOZ) directories. More over, DOMZ isn't above suspicion which becomes apparent if you browse this forum.

Recently, I had replied different thread on this subject and I think helps to a good extent to you.
