You should use directories to quick start your site. Doing directory submissions will get you some long tail search engine hits and also move your targeted keywords into the top 100 of google. If you have good content you'll get some more links back to your site from people who found your pages on the long tail searches. This will boost you even higher. What I like to do is just spend 15 minutes every day doing directory submissions.
a bit confuse with the answerws. Most are approve that directories are good for backlinks. But some said that we shouldn't submit to directories that are consider as link farm.. my question is, which one is NOT considered as link farm? Because in my general knowledge, all directories, are "farm" of links?? can anybody explain?
Hi Guys! I am concentrating on one way links and my site have PR 3 with fine content, traffic and ranking is also fine but i am not satisfied with my backlinks. it is just 28 with in 3 years. i have submitted my site in 1000s of good directories, i dont know whats problem there??

yes submit your site to directories that has pr so that you will get quality backlinks from them, and your site can also get pr.. i submit my site to http://www.directorycritic.com you can see the pr of each directory there.
Submit your site on few but good directories go with quality ignore quantity then it's sure your will get back links from each directory
