For both. Pagerank distribution however depends on the PR of the page on which your link gets listed. (Interior category)

if you are a starter then start with
    1) dmoz
    2) yahoo dir
    3) yahoo kids directory
and try some more top directory with pr8,9+ [not too many]

then you will have lot's of pr4-7, try to find the free ones.

also paid is good, then it deponds on you, how much you can spend.:D

To get into Yahoo and Dmoz isn't easy unless you have some $ and a good quality site. So I wouldn't recommend them to a starter at all.

Page rank distribution depends on the page where you are listed and the number of outbound links on that page.

Some directories are indexed pretty frequently and some may provide traffic too if you are in an extremely niche category.

Rotate your descriptions and other stuff though.

That is the first post that I have seen about Dmoz. I totally agree with Dmoz and Yahoo. It is my experience that Dmoz and Yahoo take sites that are newer but has the right ingredients like, good content, an about us page, a contact us page, and a privacy policy. I would wait about a week after submitting to Yahoo and Dmoz and start linking your site wherever you can put it, in relevent catagories that is, and recipricating with 100% relevent sites and then you will be on the road to Rank Land!!

    Agreed.

If the pages have pagerank - awesome. If not, it's still a backlink.

Changing your anchor text around will make your site rank better for more phrases ;)

it is not easy to get listed in DMOZ,You have to make proper title and description for your site.other wise they will decline your request.so my advise is to study other sites which is already listed and than go for submission.

Directory Submissions do help in getting one way links to your site so if those links are good quality links with decent Pagerank, they would definitely boost your site's pagerank.

Here's another list of free directories you can use to submit your site to : http://www.addurl.nu

Make sure you don't start firing off to any old directory though.
No link is better than an irrelevant link.

Search engine submission has nothing to do with page rank, it will even hurt you, because you are letting know to the search engine what you are doing..and directory submissions, yes they are helphul, but some of them, not really..maybe it can make your website sick...

Hey DSB, do you really believe no link is better than an irrelevant link? In that case, I could penalize a competitor by buying them irrevelant links? That goes against what I understood. I am interested in your opinion.
