Directory submission user reviews

I keep seeing all these advertisements all over these forums "submit your site to 10k directories", and some people seem to be eating this up.

It looked like a great deal, but then in the larger articles posted on this forum I've been reading "if you want your site to do well, don't submit to 10k directories, manually submit to good high ranking relevant sites".

What do you guys recommend doing? Do you think it's worth it to pay the $10 (so cheap) and get your site listed on a million and one directories?

I have been accumulating directories for many years and I can tell you that there are not anywhere near 10,000 free directories on the net. We do manual submissions and it is hard to keep a good list of 300 free directories to submit to.

It is more likely that your site will be sent to paid directories or inappropriate niche or regional directories. These sites would consider the submissions as spam.

I would recommend getting quality links from real sites.
Even better if they are sites related to your niche.

Submitting to directories won't help but I think it's not that important nowadays.

Then I guess I dont really understand how this works. How do you go about getting a link to your site on other sites? Do you actually email / call the webmaster? Wouldn't that be extremely difficult for high ranking sites?

And I dont want links to other sites all over my page? What's the best solution?

I have often read that this can do more harm then good for a site. Look for quality and submit to the most fitting ones to your industry group.
    Best of luck

I paid about $40 (can't remember the exact amount!) to a DP member to do this for me, and was very pleased with the results. I do know of situations where this has not worked well, though.

I suggest you only submit to high PR directories. Like Yahoo directory, Dmoz etc

    do some low ones too looks a bit strange having 1 pr7, 10 pr6, 20 pr 5, 60 pr4 and nothing below.
As long as the person your paying is submitting your link with description etc to relevent sites over some time say 15-30 a day then i carnt see it causing too much of a problem since acceptance times will cause a greater gap and google wont go hey 10000 back links in one day? :O

top 5 things for links :p

It is better to err on the side of caution. If you want to experiment, do it with a site that you don't care about.

I would always suggest going with manual submissions.. and if you using automated / semi-automated.. don't submit to more than 10-20 directories in a day. :)

Quality is better than quantity and submitting your site to too many directories at once can hurt you.

Submit away but don't assume its going to get you to number one in the SERPs for a super competitive term and DON'T ever assume its going to give you a high PR website.

Also 1000 in one day for a new site-NOT recommended obviously.
