Directory Submission still effective?

    Hi everyone,

After Google started to penalize paid backlinks I wonder if they also changed their attitude towards directory links. Is it still recommendable to get a website listed in directories ?

    Thanks,

    Phil :)

They are one way links anyway and so can help. Not all web directories are bad.

they are not effective as they used to be, but they are still ok
their weight is not really counted, but hey, they are still back links

and the good thing about them, is that you can easily aim for many different versions of your
key word, because you can easily control the anchor text

    I agree.

Moreover I think that Google intend to penalise bad quality sites, not the whole world of directories.

Imho, given two web directories (same quality, one apid the other free) it's better to have a one way link from a paid directory rather than a reciprocal link from a free one.

I think that 4-5 years ago it was one of the main things in SEO. And still, but less important.

Directory submission is not effective as it used to be but for some easy keyword, directory submission can help in your site ranking. However, you should get your site listed in many "quality" directory before get links from free of bunch directories to help build up good link profile. You should mix your own anchor text for submit directory to avoid look like spamming which may dilute your site ranking and trust.

Why directory is not much effective any more? Because they are too many of them in market, almost the same category and have no weight/trust would be given by listed in these directories except you can wait for 1 year to get trust from directory links due to domain age factor. Domain age and not too many empty categories in the directory is the key for not be penalized by duplication. If directory got many page with too much less listing, looked likeempty then most of those pages will be looking the same in search engine bots eye and those pages may be de-indexed or penalized for duplication and not give any benefits for any site for being listed in that directory

@pulikuttann. I used to use free directory submission but not sure it gives me backlinks... any suggestion how to properly check 'em (I use google webmaster tools to check)? Since I hardly find them I think it's not quite effective. most of them ask us to add their link in our site before our link submission is approved. But I do follow friends' suggestion to keep submitting my site to free directories as they said this would take time...

Avoid submitting your sites in penalized directories, Check the cache date of page where you are going to submit your pages, dont do speedy submissions, submit slowly but in quality directories. Use multiple anchor texts.
