Social networking sites far out do any directory submission, the other positive factor is you actually visitors from those sites.

My stats show me little to no visitors from directory submissions

Most directory owners/editors reject websites with loads of affiliate links. You might want to go for other methods to get backlinks for your website. sparrowhill mentioned social bookmarking, I have seen good traffic from these submissions but conversion rate for SB traffic is much lower than organic traffic.

Directory submissions help you rise higher in the SERPs, but only a few niche directories and well know general directories bring you much traffic. If your landing page is affiliate content (duplicated from the main site) you won't get indexed by google so submitting to directories probably won't help you. So your link building (and marketing) should be focused on places that give you traffic. Forum posts, social sites, or a pay per click campaign.
