Directory submission depending on the age of the directory and the authority it holds in its niche, can be pretty good, many swear by article directories

Well, I think directory submission can be effective if your site is submitted to highly reputable directory such Dmoz, and Yahoo directory.

My suspicions are the same as most everyone else. Submit articles to the top directories and maybe use automated submissions to the lower ranked directories to get backlinks. But, does anyone have any empirical evidence to support our hunches? We think it's a worthwhile use of time to submit to numerous directories, but is it really worth the effort? I'm not taking issue with everyone, and I follow the same submission plan myself, but sometimes I'm not so sure it's worth the time that it takes.

its worth, if you care to submit unique titles and descriptions with each submission. Don't do just 1 or 2 titles and same description.

Yes that directory is very effective while almost most of it is dofollow link it you place in a correct and related directories.
Most of directories now do need you to exchange their link and code on your site. So make sure that the directories website do not harm your website.
If not, it will bring poor backlink to you and influence your website reputation and performance.

Directory submission is still effective. Directory submission creates huge backlinks for your website. Submitting your site to well designed seo-friendly directories having Good page rank may not bring huge visitors directly through the web directories but help to improve website serp.

Article submission is dead! even unique submission - better to blog and increase content on site. Directory submission is only useful for high quality directories, Yahoo, Joe ant, Business.com ect

I've pretty much stopped doing all article submissions, as mentioned before, I still trust in the high quality directories like Yahoo.

    Depends on the directory.

If they're quality directories that are actually used by real people and are relevant to your website, then yes they're very effective.

If they're directories geared only towards seo and are just big pages of links, then no they're probably not very effective.

I think directory submission and specially "slow directory submission" in PR3+ directories is a great way to get strong backlinks. Directory submission ensures good ranking and more traffic. Just select quality directories and post your link manually in the right category. You will definitely get huge benefit for getting back links from these direcotries. Search engine bots crawl these directories and get listing from there. So go for directory submission but don't waste time on massive directory submission in low PR directories. That is garbage!
