    I think you can use one by one directory submission is better for SEO, I have already submitted my article top directory's one by one and get best result too our website.

    manual is and would always be better than automatic submissions. Moreover doing work manually gives more control to you. There is no fixed number to be termed as good. Apply some common sense and keep your off page work to limited number of activities. Google doesn't want spam any more always remember that!!!

    I do not use link directories any more. But article directories are still good :).
