Directory Spam and People Not Obeying Rules

I don't want to correct every entry, as the user is clearly told what the rules are. Therefore, when somebody (obviously an outsourced Indian btw) submits nearly 50 sites and submits 5 deeplinks for all of them, and doesn't either pay or give me a reciprocal, I delete them and email the poster.

Is there anything I can do? I don't want to enable the security image, as I get better submission numbers when its off...

captcha wouldn't do anything. That kind of spam isn't make by robots.
But you can allow only one submission for each domain (really easy to do with every web language).
If someone submit an url for which the same domain is already listed or waiting to be, you refuse it.

Well my submitter informed me about this problem. And I got your email. Well let me tell you clearly dude, its your fault and not mine.

Install original mods and not freely available ripped off mods. You have installed Deep Links mods and if the submissions were Regular, please let me know how did 5 deep links get delivered your end?

Kindly be clear your end before accusing someone of spamming.

And this is some of the reasons the directory industry can't move forward.

I think all directories have this problem, regardless of captcha, guidelines, etc. there are always gonna be people who submit tons of submissions that don't follow the rules.

If it's just one listing that seems like one honest mistake made by someone whose site is a perfect match for ours (it's a niche directory) I might correct the entry & add it.

But the ones who can't be bothered to read the submission rules and blatantly flaunt them? And the ones that submit dozens of sites that don't follow the rules? I delete 'em. I may also ban the domain and/or the IP address, depending on how obnoxious it was.

I don't care if folks are the website owner or a directory submission service. But I do care when folks carelessly submit (for example) automotive supplies, financial sites, and to my art directory and those IPs get banned....

I don't worry about it much; I just make the rules as clear as possible, and if people don't care to follow them - or at least try to! - I decline the submission. And I don't lose any sleep over it.

OK, well that's my very rambling reply...
    cheers ~
    Denise

Main point is if I am going to have a FREE directory anyone should have the DECENCY to even visit the site. After all they are asking for a free link and that is the VERY LEAST they can do. If they will use a submission form theres always a DELETE BUTTON available and one can use freely otherwise just like a normal website owner who has the time to go into the NORMAL PROCEDURE there will be a NORMAL REVIEW and I think that is fair.

It says clearly on my submit page that Regular links +5 deeplinks are $5, followed by Regular Links which feature 3 Deeplinks for free, followed by reciprocal +5 deeplinks for free.

If you would limit yourself to the 3 deeplinks and obey the rules, all would be well. Have your submitters follow the rules. I don't mind if its a bot, as long as the submission isn't spammy and doesn't break the rules. I am getting 5 deeplinks as your submitter is apparently selecting the reciprocal option, btw. Either that, or it is unhiding the javascript entry boxes numbers 4 and 5. I would say it is actually your issue, dude. If there is anything I can do (besides buying a mod that does the exact same thing and has basically the same code) I will. Let me know, and we can alleviate this situation, as I in no way mean to anger, inconvenience, or flame you.

It depends on the spam protection, but there are scripts out there, that do offer a very good system, if you do not pay it will end up as an 'suspended listing', it's like setting a link as inactive on phpLD :)

I tried submitting 2 different directories (regular links with 3 deep links) and it kept timing out on me and giving me error unauthorised as far as deep link mod get anOns which IMHO is the best

What's wrong, are you trying to say that you don't allow deeplinks and that's just the problem. If that's the cause then that is not really an issue. If you know php then you can write a script that will strip the url so that it only includes the homepage of the site.

If you are going to attempt manipulate scripts by surfing with javascript off or whatever, why don't you get in to cracking sites and XSS injecting .. I hear there is a bunch more money there than directory submission.

I might be reading your post wrong but all I get from that is "You expect me not to steal from someone who left their door unlocked". True, this guy did not install your script of choice from your favorite DP member ... but does that really give you the right to abuse the system he has in place?

Before answering, remember that you are running a submission service and what you say can, and will, be held against you ... and your business.

In short, you just admitted to not playing by the rules.

So free submissions don't get deep links but paid submissions do? If that is the case, then a little bit of simple coding will eliminate the hassle of you having to manually delete their deep link submissions (if they used the free option). It's quite simple to mod your template so that featured links show up to 5 deep links, regular shows up to 3 deep links, and free shows none (their deep links are still written to the database, but just aren't shown unless they submitted properly).

So, they end up just wasting their time submitting all those deep links, rather than wasting yours having to erase them.

The phpLynx script being one of them, you can actually get a link auto-deleted if payment isn't made which prevents them annoying pending status links that can in a worse case scenario take up system resources like spamguard causes.

First the site popup's and accepts more deep links, Not my fault. I have no idea why my submitter got to submit those extra deep links.

Secondly keep your piece of junk advice with yourself. Seems you hear a lot about money making keep it to yourself please.

Third I don't run a submission service. Read before you comment.

Fourth I don't care who's script is install, atleast install it properly? It works in a wrong way and then someone sends angry emails.

Verify something before you launch it in public is the simple answer. If you don't care or bother about something you do, why should its users?

    : Yawn :
