I can see that my post on this thread regarding directory sites and the number of unique visitors per day was not appreciated, neither was my point of view respected. It’s nice to know that we can chat freely on this forum!!!

Please conceder my previous post to this thread revoked

Emperor, yes we are free to express our own opinions. It doesn't matter if no one else sees things the way you do. We are all entitled to our thoughts and no one is saying otherwise.

I like directories as a user because if Yahoo didn't start what it did, we will all be still be pretty much lost as where to find what information amongst the millions of web sites available. Web Directories helps organize things so that we know where to go when we want to look for something.

The problem is that a few DP members thought it unpleasant what I wrote and gave me some negative Reputation points. I think that that was way over the top, but that’s just me. I don’t really want to talk about this anymore so I’ll just leave at that.

I still think that a site that only gets 200 to 300 unique visits per day is weak. I say this because I have a blog that averages that and don’t think it’s that much of a deal to boast about.

I am not sure about the negative reputation points but that is definitely a low blow.

True, 200 to 300 uniques is definitely weak and I don't deny that there is probably too many run-of-the-mill directories out there. But directories if done right can grow to be something huge especially if it is a niche directory.

If you check in your User CP at the bottom you will se what it is.

If directories are doing so well, and by the number of positive posts many people seem to recommend them, I think I’ll start one. I saw a few free scripts over at www.freshmeat.net that looked good so I’ll just use one of those to get started. I just don’t understand one thing, do you charge people a submission fee or just make cash from publicity and links.

I think the trend is that when you are starting out new, you want your directory to be populated and at that point, you probably want to allow for free listing. Only when you get the page rank and thus enough eyeballs that you move to a paid listing. Before that time, paid listing would probably be just for sponsored or featured links or banners.

Directories might be a way to give yourself backlinks especially useful with google and the page rank thingy.

I don't think directories are being sold for enough.

I had a look at some sales threads and the valuation and sale price of well developed directories seems to be a lot lower than I expected.

Directories take next to no work, most of the work is verifying submissions, if you have a paid directory this is more than worth the time it takes, other than that you only have to market.

I think directories are worth more than most sites if your just going by revenue, they give a great ROI.

Does anyone know of any decent free directory scripts that I can try out? It doesn’t have to be anything spectacular it’s just to see how it works and if setting one up would require a lot of maintenance. Thanks.

    Phpld is the best.
    Go to http://www.phpld.com
Down at bottom for "php link directory"
Version 3 has a minor cost.
Version 2 is free...pick that one if you want free.
Plenty of templates abound for this.
    Go to http://www.phpldtemplates.com/
This is the site of SiteExpress, a great person who can help you.
You can also find more templates at the buy, sell, trade forum under templates.

See my modded directory (I took the brandywine template and added a bit of the block2 template) at: http://www.linkheredirectory.com

Simple to load up the script and templates and make the changes you want.
Or for a boat load of cash, will load up the script and the template you want.
Then you will need to populate the directory with categories, etc.
Again, SiteExpress has great ready to go category groups for sale.

Thanks for the links, I’m going to try making one this week then if things work out will think of purchasing the pro version.

I would like to leave a comment to whoever sent me this nice remark “You're pathetic, seriously.” I know you’ll come back to see my reaction, that’s how people like you work. I would just like to say, get a life you pathetic looser at least I have the gust to say things openly and don’t go around leaving negative anonymous comments so that people can’t defend them selves. Seriously grow up and get a personality. If you have something to say just say it in front of everyone like a man and quit sending me negative comments because that’s PATHETIC.

The best way to deal with those negative comments and points is to simply ignore them. If you keep reacting then you are giving the folks that did it exaclty what they want.

I recently created a directory for real estate agents. I plan on developing two more for junior colleges and the other one for myspace music layouts. The reason I started getting into directories lately was just to practice my php skills. I did not know directory sites where that popular.

Good niches you are working on!
I believe over time, that niche directories will be the way to go.
    Still room for general directories.

Just like building up niche websites, build up some niche directories to go with them.
