I never said anything about directories been devalued by google, I am just talking about duplicate content in general. I have seen turnkey sites never make the top 500 in any search engine because they were duplicates.

If you have site with predominantly duplicate content I can't see how adding RSS feeds will help.

You seem to be profitting here so I don't know if you would be considered objective. You never answered my questions in one of the sites you were selling http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=69850

You are selling the site like an established directory. I believe that at minimum you should be providing full disclosure. If you are selling a turnkey type site, one that you can sell as often as possible, you should tell people. In my opinion, that would be better than buyer beware.

I do agree with your statement. I build custom directories daily, and I put a lot of hard work into them. I don't necessarily agree with the idea of using a free template, a free directory, throwing some categories in it and making a profit, but the way I see it, if someone wants to pay for it, by all means go for it.

Personally, I would not buy a "Cookie Cutter" type directory such as described. I much more prefer to be original. Not much difference in them from any turnkey site, IMO.

I like to see people put a little work into their projects. Make it unique, and then feel good about what you accomplished.

Yeah, when all the sites this person has for sale are phpld scripted, all with free templates, etc.
It hits the realm of cookie cutter sites.
Like all the adsense optimized cookie cutters that are now not worth whatever people are trying to sell them for (geesh, even on here, people want more than they are worth).

Boils down for anyone, and I mean anyone, who wants a directory...to start their own!
How hard a concept is that?
Why buy a cookie cutter when for 8 bucks, a domain.
phpld free script is simple to upload (heck, I did it!), templates abound that are free (and easy to customize) and hosting is cheap.

    Hey...anyone want a directory?
Get a domain, and I will upload the phpld script, a template you want from the free ones. Populate the directory with a general categorization.
    And all for $10!

    I hear you iowadawg

I see a lot of directories in my line of work. I am starting to see a trend towards automation. Not two or three, but dozens or hundreds of directories that are very similar.

I never intended to buy or create a directory but I bought the one in my signature about a month ago because it was a bargain, it already had a PR3 and I bought it for just 40$. I have made more than that in just one month from sponsored listings and if I ever get bored with it I can sell it for much more than what I bought it for especially if it gets a nice PR in the next update.

What is wrong with the owner of the directory adding links? Personally, I think the directory owner should add links. What better way to assure quality listings than hand picked sites?

The majority of the sites in my directory were hand picked by me

With the owner adding links, very good idea.
I just have not done that with my directories.
A general directory, no, I don't see adding links.
But a niche directory? Yes, go for it.
In fact, I have a niche directory sitting around doing not much.
So with your input here, I will load that sucker up with only the niche sites I can find (keep it simple, will only take the top 10 in google searches).

I think directories are popular for many reasons:
    1. the importance of backlinks for google ranking and serps.
    2. a great way to promote your own sites.
    3. good first site for folks looking to buy a site to run because of the easy backend.
    4. money maker, as the page rank gets up there you can start making some serious money with paid listings.
    5. content is added by users = less work for the owner.
    6. there are many site purchasers that are just looking for something to run part-time and to "get their feet wet" for them to spend $100 or $200 is not a lot of money (many have good paying jobs in the industry) and they get everything all put together and ready to go.

I have tried for the last 6 weeks to get a decent custom designed phpLD template created and finally I found someone willing to do it for a reasonable price, he put it up on two of my new directories and then disappeared, I have not heard from him in over two weeks (granted I didn't lose any money, we settled up fairly) but the point is that it is just not that easy to get one done properly espcecially if you don't have a clue what you are doing.

I did see a post a few weeks back about someone here on DP offering to set up brand new directories for people at $75 or $100 each, and that seems fair to me if he is doing a good job. People who are purchasing newer directories with some page rank, some earnings and traffic for $200-$300 are getting a fair deal IMHO.

Since I put up that comment, whoever it was, their post was removed.
Maybe they got banned, or went away, or something.
He came in, post number 1, was to his spammy adsense site.

I am officially older than dirt!
    Ask my grandkids....

Went shopping this morning with the lovely wife.
Ended up at grocery store, and when we got to the front to check out and leave...their cotton picking debit/cc system was down!
That was trying my patience to wait for it to come up, as I have no patience waiting in lines (ask my wife).
Ended up, since wife explained to me that if we left then, we would have to come back and start all over again, walking two blocks to the bank, use the atm machine, walk back, and checked out paying cash.
Cheap store would not even let me have a drink free!

You think they are cheap, McDonalds wanted to charge me .30 for an extra syrup for my pancakes this morning, needless to say I went without the extra sugar rush.

I can not see going to mcd's for pancakes.
They have yet to actually get their egg/sausage creation in a bagel right.

Ya it is that nasty sauce, but the pancakes are not too bad, especially drowned in extra sugary syrup.

Better pancakes, all the syrup you want (different flavors) and more pancakes at no cost.
Plus actual real good service with free coffee refills.
More comfortable chairs with real padding.

    Hey, I am old!
    Retired.
    Enjoying life.
But my mind is all there and yes, I know what this thread is all about.

Working now on a plan to create directories for those who want a directory.
Have yet to decide, do I get domains, load up the directories and sell them?
Or just let people get a domain, and I load up the directories?
