    Hi all,

can someone explain to me how to optimize a Directory for SERP? There is no real content in the directory so I just submit directory to other directories?

I do not like spaming and stuffing keywords in the title when submitting, so how do you optimise for lets say "submit link" keyword, or something similar?

    Thanks!

Try starting out with a few proper meta tags - a description one would be a good start!

I believe On-page optimizations like Meta-tags etc. are only good for MSN/Yahoo/ATW/Altavista. For the big boy --it is contents and links that is the most important.

I know some good directories have several sub-domains--with blogs related to anything --these contents are the secret for ranking their domain high on SERPs. G like off-page optimization --it cares little about on-page.

Thanks! Does a subdomain automatically helps a domain rank higher or you have to make links from blog to dir?

Just treat the directory the same way you would any other site. SEO is all the same no matter what kind of site you are doing it for.

Surprisingly, not many promote their directory for a higher position at G SERPs. Many owners simply promote their directories for PR.

Keywords for directories, especially general, are very competitive. If you want lots of traffic, you have almost no choice to promote general ones, but then competition is severe. Investment is the only way to win it.

So, optimization for a directory for a higher rank in G SERPs is really depending on how much you can invest.

Compiling a list of the highest pr free directory's, Compiling a list of free PHPLD themes stuff like this can be really good for link baiting, then pay for a few blog posts then wait for the diggs to roll in :D

1st you need to get Google and Yahoo to trust your directory which is no walk in the park (they don't trust myne at the moment), then you need loads of anchor text links using the phrase(s) you want to rank for, on-page isn't that important if you have enough anchor text links but as previously stated do your description tag and your keywords.

Directories normally only rank for “long tail” searches, and for this you need content.

G requires offpage and yahoo/Msn requires onpage, now decide which SE you are targetting for ;) and these days all the dir scripts have inbuild onpage seo options like the meta tags etc, so you just need to take care about the offpage things :)
    Amit

I would say thats wrong, you can check gii's keyword ranking and know for how many keywords it ranks ;) as i said offpage seo is must :)
