Or even better yet - an engine that can look at a site and automatically attempt to place it in the appropriate category - rather than depending on the site owner's opinion.

Ability to provide a main link to homepage and 1 random deep link that changes daily/weekly/monthly.

Yes, having deeplinks to several pages for featured listings. Good call!

    Hey DP,

I'm just curious about a few things, I've been browsing lots around, and thought and thread like this would make sense.

What's the most important features that a directory script should support? Name them, and write something descriptive about them.

In my opinion, it should have a very good protection against spam, and a good search system such as, search by place, name or service, and another very important thing would be that you should be able to edit the template without any problems..

What's your view on this? Name up some of the features, and write something descriptive about it ;)

    Thanks,
    WatchOut

I like this idea by jmort732 very much:
The ability to add functionality without having to modify the core code or templates. If widgets could be designed where you can easily install them (and the source code were available so people could easily make / code widgets), this would put your script heads above the rest.

A good script should be unencoded so that purchasers know that nothing is being hidden.

I believe a script should be as secure as humanly possible so folks are not susceptable to being hacked.

I too would like to see some sort of mod system like many of the blogs have where you download/install and are ready to go without redoing the templates and style sheets.

I would also like to see a set of "naked" templates offered where the core code is in place and nothing else with comments as appropriate to ensure things continue to function correctly. That way I could go full CSS, use tables, a template not designed for the script or whatever I wanted; rather than having to strip what's needed out from someone else's layout and patch it back together.
