Directory script recommendations

    Hey all,

I am new to the Directories world. Can you let me know if there are directory scripts out there that satisfy the requirements below? Free or not-too-expensive options are welcome.

    1) Static urls to the sites listed
    2) Category URLs contain category names, not category ids
    3) Listing contains at least 3 visible items: link title, description and URL
    4) Ability *not* to display PR bar next to each link.
    5) Ability to edit listings by submitters at any time.
    6) Admin's ability to approve new listings and modifications.
    7) Require recip. links option that could be turned off

These may be tough to find:

    8) Ability to have custom-defined fields for listings.
    9) Set a limit on the number of categories the same user can submit to.
    10) I have a site template already coded and it is pretty elaborate. A directory script that could easily be integrated within my existing layout would be nice!

If I think of something else, I'll add it here.

    Thanks a lot

Can't remember all the features right now since it's been quite a while since I was playing with it, but have a look at Site-Sift Listing http://scripts.site-sift.com/, it's from a DP member.

    I'm using Site-Sift too...
Having said that, there are also members using phplinkdirectory...

Not sure if it satisfies your requirements for 8,9 or 10...

Thanks a lot for the pointers, guys. I'll check out sife-sift script

Is there one script that you know of that definitely has at least the 1-7 functionality?

The above suggested script are great. But you can also wait for the script from Jeremy (Kingbloom) or the pro version of site-sift listings. Both due to arrive any time now.

Site-sift script takes care of 1-7. As for 4, their script does not display PR.

Any commercial scripts that nail these requirements? I'm looking around, too, but could spend a little if I had to. Ease of use and support matter.

site-sift.com directory shows categories as numbers in the urls. I'd really like to have category names instead.

Editing your .htaccess file on your Apache webserver so that your URLs contain category names instead of ids isn't rocket science, is it? :D

Sure, it's possible but becomes a headache to maintain if you have a lot of categories and sub-categories

    Hi Liminal,

I've come across Site Sift myself purely by chance because I've seen many 'site sift' cloned directories which has the Site Sift link on it. Which I then clicked on and they have a directory themselves which has a PR of 8 due to the number of people linking to them.

Very cunning indeed, because now they charge a nominal fee to be included on their directory.

    Woldie. :)

They had that PR8 a while... The site-sift script is newish, so I doubt it has had any affect on their "visible" pr yet.

Only part of the URLs are numerals. The cats and subcats are included in the URLs too... :)

Personally i think the link back is a very bad idea, look at http://www.biz-directory.org/ now, zero PR.

Then in matt cutts recent blog - http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/seo-mistakes-crappy-doorway-pages/ Here matt states people who do seo on clients sites add a link back to them and this is bad idea.
