I have recently purchased a directory, and i have a question, is it beneficial to approve all the links fast ? or should i take my time, in other words if i approve all the pending links quick will it improve my directory ? ie in serps etc..

Take your time and only approve submissions which will benefit your site visitors. It doesn't matter if you rank high in the serps if when a users gets their you only list a load of rubbish. Focus on quality not quantity would be my advice.

Yes in theory, because the more links you have the more content your directory has too. Make sure you edit the descriptions too, don't just accept what people submit as they have likely submitted the exact same content to 5000 other directories.

good advice from Silky and id also add that when you get time you could start to go through the already approved links and write unique descriptions for them

Make your mind adjusted to the fact that the directory that you are building is going to be useful to your visitors so keep the links in the most relevant categories, so that the visitors get a good impression about the directory before leaving the page.
And most of the rest like editing description and building content for your directory etc. are some other good things.

Directories are not meant for offering links only. Main essence associated with directories are human editorial element.
As a directory owner and editor, your primary job is to review all the sites that submitted to your directory and only approve sites that you deem quality. It is not the number-but the quality that matters.

Besides, too much-too soon is never Good. So take your time.:)

Take your time and move at your own pace.. Set your own guidelines and timeline for reviewing a site and then stick with it. Unless you are approving 5,000 sites a day, I highly doubt the frequency with which a site goes live is going to trip some alarm at Google or anywhere else for that matter.

Just take your time... Be careful of this though... There are times I've been so interested in a site I was reviewing I spent way TOO MUCH time there.
