Directory sales text needs much work. Directories built around scripts say the same boring stuff eg: Submit Link or Suggest a site - nothing to actually sell the listings.

So I offer some tested sales text that will help directory owners to sell more:

This is for the directory to put on their site

    • Attract targeted leads - tell visitors about your business
    • Promote your website - link to your advert so customers may find you
    • Free value-added services (fill in gaps with services etc)
    • Paid for inclusion only! You don't have to worry about click fraud with us

also try adding your web statistics on your site.

Good points, though the people who most need to listen have not proven to do so in the past.

I'd say you may well have a point - such issues do need to be addressed - but I'm yet to see a directory which you own which is successful so wouldn't go fixing what ain't broken...or did I miss the big launch party?

Nice advice nonetheless - glad to see somebody posting for the good of others every once in a while;)

When you have people emailing YOU, to renew their listing(s), you DON'T need a 'pitch'.

Yes, then again no pitch is required to rip someone off is it. I dare say many are at that game huh :)

    Well, that depends;

According to the very title of *your* thread, you titled it:
'Directory owners - want more sales? Then change your sales pitch!'

So you are telling everyone to 'run a sales pitch' and rip them off.

Great logic there. Seems you a$$ed yourself out in your own thread.

You're a web designer right? So design something, and get some press yourself, seriously don't waste your time worrying about what I have.

I never made it to make a living off :)
honestly, 2 or 3 sales a week is more time then I want to invest in it ;) and then to top it off, it's usually crappy sites so I'll end up refunding the amount because I don't want to associate myself with those sites.

oh.. and all our listing are perm, I don't have time to mess with renewals and subscriptions.. and yes I know they can be a "set it and forget it" but just something about charging for a link every year gets to me... I never purchase dir listing that are annually and I don't plan to ever charge that way.

The most important thing for a directory is its PR, specially if you have some PR value for the inner pages. Webmasters are submitting their links for quality backlinks, so if you have PR, you have sales.

But those sales won't last long.... Let me explain:

Kid sets up directory to sell off PR, it's boderline successful until Google slaps them for selling PR. Punters that bought listings see PR drop, and word spreads on forums that dirs are shit - and directories die.

The PR directory aids it's own decline. It doesn't work, there's no longevity with instant desert directories. mmmmm instant desert tastes nice - instant directory leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Crap directories never work, er because their crap.

A "pitch" is all part of a professional marketing strategy. A pitch sounds like something a used car salesman would use, but it's really just the equivelant of an elevator speech and a call to action for users. Calling it a pitch doesn't help the image but that's exactly what it is. Get your point across in as few words as possible.

If you're relying on your customers to initiate all of your sales, you're nowhere near as profitable as you could be.

    POW! :p

That's because they aren't selling listings, they are offering a Website review.

Assuming is the mother of all f'ups.

    1. My post was with regards to NOT having to 'pitch' to sale.
    2. Customers ARE your sales.
    3. Given 1 & 2, your post makes no sense.

Now, to reiterate on the 'customers', if a listing expires and they email you about it, what exactly do you think that is saying for your project? Oh, I think it says a hell of a lot.

Hint: It's called *residual income* (learn it, live it, & love it)

    Booyah!

hmmm, I'm not sure about that, most I've stumbled on don't review anything. After checking found they ask for a straight one-time or recip fee, no review at all.

I guess many don't have the time to review sites, they are likely swamped with webmaster submissions. Saw one directory with 10k of sites to authorise

That's not what the OP is saying.

Yes, returning customers are great. Until a directory owner is fortunate and dedicated enough to get and keep those recurring customers, they need to actually get customers in the first place. Hence, this thread, and said advice to assist in aforementioned activity.

I'll get my silly jock sayings thesaurus from my other duffel bag and update ASAP.

The hilarious thing about this response is you *missed the OP's agreeance post that he made and went back and deleted*

In his post he agreed with what I said and agree that he did a$$ his own thread, and enjoys mis-informing the ladder of the community.

    you just finished posting that:
(which i clearly posted that customers ARE your sales and thus needed whether it be residually or initially)

Make up your mind, because you are contradicting yourself; in first saying 'you cant rely on the customer', and now saying 'you need to rely on the customer'

This is comedy gold stuff you're posting here.

Get whatever it is you need to get in order to stop butting your own head with your own posts.
