This is a question for all to answer.

I have been submiting to directorys and submiting sites using . Some of the sites declined me. I then resubmitted using a personal email to keep on top of them and I got accepted.

Do you guys think directory owners are just spammers and want your real email?

I have got no spamm. Yet

ell, it is possible that some directories owner to be spammers, but this is not a rule. A spammer is a spammer even if he has a directory or another type of website.

Some directory networks seem to exist to harvest email addresses. iEntry comes to mind, but who knows they may have changed their ways. Regardless, it is best to use a disposable E-mail account when submitting to questionable directories. The more respected directories may have a legitimate need to contact you so keep that in mind as well.

I am having problems with some directory owners that send me SPAM emails several times a week. But, I didn't use my personal email, so I am not worried.

But this isn't a general rule. I own a directory, and I haven't sent any email to my list, ..... ..... yet :p

This is also very true and respected directories will at times have a legitimate need to contact you. Just a few might be.

If a listed site goes offline they may need to email and check the sites status.

I have needed to contact owners on issues with their submitted sites that were found during review.

If annual listings are offered they may need to notify the owner when renewal is arriving.

Email addresses can also be a validation check for requests that are received at the directory to change listing information after the fact.

There are numerous, valid reasons to give a good email address to respected directories.

Having said that, when it comes to free directories I always use a gmail account. I never used to but after getting spammed to death from some of the free directories snowbird mentioned I opted for gmail in the case of free directories.

My opinion of a free directory that requires email validation of a submission is that they were definitely one of the sites that was going to spam me if they need a good email address that badly. It goes about the same for free directories which ban submits from those using gmail accounts.

yes, it is always better to put your REAL, personal email, because you can even become a confirmation email from directory site.

I have had this problem in the past.

I started to make a email account that I only used for submissions, then I deleted it after a few weeks.

On my main email address I was getting 200 spam emails per day and it was a real psin, until I activated boxtrapper on the server, that has stopped all the spam.

The thing about not using a real email is confirmation but I suppose it is only a few who send them out.

I absolutely never "click here to verify" in emails because I have had several cases where a virus tried to grab me doing so. So directory owners who require confirmation simply do not get it from me.

And like most said above, make an email account separate from your main one or you will be over run with spam (I learned the hard way).

I am a directory owner and submitters, if they wish to be able to get a confirmation AND be able to modify their submission, need to use a legitimate email address.

If they use a fake one they'll still get accepted (provided they submitted within the guidelines) but they may never know.

Like anything, the running of a directory will no doubt be inviting to those inclined to be spammers and scammers.

As per my experience, I do not think directory owners are spammers. At least not majority of them. I have submitted my sites to hundreds of directories till now, and I only get very little spam, and that too is from the offer sites I guess that I used to join in my beginner days.

Moreover, I have never been asked to submit an email ID other than what I filled up, which was usually .

There are bad guys in every field and unfortunately some directory owners would sell your email address to spammers. In my experience majority of them are not into spamming.

Submitters do more SPAM than a directory owner. Directory owners ask for real email to reduce SPAM submission ..... lol but here submitter are afraid to get SPAM :) I'm also running a directory and I'm providing free service and putting other websites free of cost.... so, we have rights to ask for real email. Nothing is free on the web.

As far as I know, very few people verify their submission if we send verification emails. So, its look like worthless to sent emails to submitter. But I do. I don't send a verification email....its just email that contains greeting to submitters. Sending greeting is not my aim. My motto is to determine whether the email is working or not. If I got undelivered return email, suddenly I keep that submission as a SPAM because I always ask to provide correct email :D Who try to do SPAM with me.....I'll put them at my SPAM LIST. ;)

More than 80% submitters ignore TOC of directories. If we simply delete them from the list......they'll keep doing SPAM. So, I consider all the submission as a SPAM who goes against of my TOC and will appear the website at SPAM list.

Usually I don't receive any spammy emails from the directories I submit too.
You can always use some stupid gmail address when submitting to "risky" directories.

Submitters are the spammers. I get so many spam submissions that I am considering not running directories any more. What a shame that spammers have to ruin it for all of us. If you are afraid of spamming directories them find other places to spam your links to.
