Directory owners should keep the submitters link till the life of the directory.. Directorie's life last till the domain is dropped or something happens to the owner.
Exactly. As a directory becomes more populated it becomes necessary to restructure certain categories. This is just part of running a directory. There is no need to contact you about it. In fact, most directories specifically state in their terms of use that the editors have every right to place or, in the future, move your listing to a different category. Now deleting listings...yea, that's shady. Unless, of course, the website has changed content and now is in violation of the directories terms.
no problem indyguidedotinfo! There are individuals using the system tracking hundred of links that are happy with it.
I see no issue with moving directory listings. But deleting paid listings is unacceptable under normal circumstances (ie, no explicit directory guidelines have been broken), and in all cases the link owner should be informed. I would like to see a list of all of the directories where this has happened, with details of which website was removed and what, if anything, the directory owner had to say in their defence.
I think:- Lifetime link means lifetime link. Changing the structure is often needed as a directory grows.
I agree to a certain extent, but your assertion does not justify many directory owners' lack of common courtesy in not sending out mailing list notices to all paying customers.
Really? If you openly stated that directly on your submission form, I would never give you my business. Is your opinion of your customers so low that you don't respect their time or energy in having to figure out what happened to their links? You don't think you have an obligation to properly inform your customers of changes? Is it so difficult to set-up a mailing list? My time is more costly than the fee that I pay to any directory. There is absolutely no excuse for not having a simple mailing list, which is built-in to most hosting plans.
I'm not understanding why you feel that a directory owner is obligated to notify anyone when they make changes to their directory? It's just a fact that as a directory grows, listings may be edited/moved to accomodate the growth.
1. Common courtesy; 2. Responsible business practice; 3. Good customer relations; 4. No legitimate reason not to do so; a directory owner can inform all paying customers with a single click.
Definitely not a suggestion I would ever consider implementing. I'm not going to, nor do I feel the obligation to inform anyone when I decide to recategorize listings to grow my directory. I do appreciate your understanding and you have mine as well. Cheers.
I am surprised by your stance. Of course, you can choose to do whatever you wish with your directory, but you should also respect customers' time and energy (or lackthereof) by communicating your intentions openly--and in advance--at the top of your order form. Thank you

It is stated, and if you didn't feel comfortable with it....then by all means, don't submit. As I stated though, most directories clearly state they have every right to edit/move your listing for whatever reasons. If you agree (by submitting) then you have no right to complain.
I never stated that I had a problem with directory owners moving links, in general. I clearly stated that I have a problem when directory owners do so without notification. As a paying customer, I deserve to be notified. For the record, your site states, "Our editors may place your site in the category that they believe most relevant." You should append "without notification." Regardless, I am referring to directories, in general, not your site, in particular.
Great post EL! I've started seeing more and more directories for sale, and wonder how many new owners remove some old links... It's wrong if they do...
One thing I agree with is that when a directory owner sells his directory and the new owner takes off sites without refunding the money, the seller is partially responsible. What needs to be done is that a contract is in place making it an obligation for the buyer to honor all ongoing agreements.
Why is it wrong? Ask yourself why these directories are for sale? What got us into this mess other than the belief that you can buy your way in?
