Most use captcha to avoid spam, but the captcha shouldn't be so hard to read that submitters can't read it. I have no problems with entering the 5 letter/number captcha codes if I can read them.

But I will not register to every directory I add my sites to. I've been to MasterMoz.com and immediately clicked away when I saw the registration. Especially if I have to then go into my email and confirm. If the whole process takes an extra 2 minutes, and every directory started doing that it, would be an extra hour of wasted time for every 30 directories I add my sites to.

    Absolutely no interest in it.

Same here, no captcha or registration. Registration process is a bit painful one.

As a submitter, when I run into a registration requirement, I automatically skip to the next directory. It's just not worth the time and irritation.

Realistically, a normal, no-registration submission still collects a fairly good amount of data, including a working email address.

It would be if you could use this as a unique selling point (USP). People are brainwashed into thinking one particular way is the 'right way' and the 'only way' when that's not true. If as a pro submittor you could offer a customer access to good directories with the selling point that if they get accepted they can access thier links and edit them themselves in future saving time and money then the customer would be all up for it.

We need to think out of the box here guys, it's not all about data, it depends what the registration is needed for, if its needed to give the user access to amend his links like the phpLynx script does then its well worth it and the way future directories are going to have to go as people get more savvy as to what they want.

Current state of play is directory owners like to call the shots, its the customers who do the paying and they want to get some v.f.m, value for money.

I do require registration in http://www.scriptycan.com and http://www.upadi2006.com .We dont charge at all there and users can add their own favorite softwares if they are not already listed. These sites were manually created and no dead links or outdated details. This site is definitely about quality resources not money .

Asking people to do registration before they submit there sites really makes the job tough and most people would say good bye to a page like that since time is money these days and not many people will be willing to spend so much time in registration unless they really do expect the output they'll be getting from being listed in your directory!

things can be different if a very well reputed directory requires registration but for a newbie, simply NO!

For directory growth, you need to eliminate all steps that make submission entries difficult. If you cannot fly through a submitting an entry on your directory in less than 20 seconds even with captcha enabled, then please reevaluate the process.

Short answer is NO, turn off registration. Even DMOZ does not require registration.

I used to but people get turned off by it. I installed spamguard and took it away. I'd recommend you do the same. Make signing up as easy as possible.
