Directory Owners: Do you get any paid submissions to your directories which are paid-only ? like If I have a 4 year old niche directory site than would it be a good idea to convert it to paid-only ? traffic is minimal only some page rank
Nobody but you can make that decision And what PR has to do with submitted site? What difference does it make? Look for content and forget about site's PR fastreplies
Only you can decide if you should begin to charge a submission fee; but one question to ask yourself - do you feel you offer your potential customers value equivalent to the fee you plan to charge? That's how they'll see it. As far as traffic goes, it might be worth the time to work on that aspect as without much traffic you'll likely receive few submissions if you begin charging a fee. Consider also that where you advertise will affect where your traffic comes from; think about your target market and try to reach them. Most will be influenced by your PageRank, but those that know better will be swayed by how well you operate and maintain your directory. When you start hearing the comparisons of the price you charge with what the toolbar says, you know your in the wrong market and not likely to reach your target audience.
The higher the page rank, the more likely to get paid submissions. If you go to paid, you will want to increase your traffic. I am starting to get interested in bid directories...
You may want to try setting it to paid at a low price to test the water and go from there. High pagerank and traffic are the factors in how successful your submissions will be.
My PR6 regional directory is getting only 1-2 paid submissions a month.Currently bringing in 60-70 bucks per month. I dont charge whole lot - like $2/year without a BL, but is still good for business citations for Google Maps and then next level is only $9/year which gives you anchor text dofollow back link. I have just created this directory end of January 2010 so it is slowly getting traffic. Being in a big city like Chicago helps but it is bigger competition to. If I had to spent money on getting traffic it would probably not be worth the effort. Here is the link to my DP post with more details http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=1868139
