I am planning to start a directory (phpld) which will be powered by adsense revenue. I am an online marketing professional with no programming expertise.

    Can anyone tell me:

    1. Which is the best OS directory script?
    2. Is it difficult to set up/install the directory? ( I am familiar with HTML only)
    3. Apart from domain name, how many MBs of server space/database required?

    1. PHPLD v3.1.
    2. Its very easy to install phpld, you don't even need to know html.
    3. I think 100mb disk space would be sufficient enough to start with.

My best wishes for your upcoming project.

There are a few good OpenSource link directories out there, but most of us here tends to prefer phpLD.

Installing phpLD is not difficult at all, it's actually real easy, it has an auto installer that you just need to do the step-by-step or 123 and your basically done. Uploading the files takes the most time...about 10 minutes and it depends on your internet connection.

What you should do first is make your Database at the php myadmin, this im sure you know, they come with your hosting. If you are in a hosting with cPanel then you're in a better luck, everything should be a breeze setting up your link directory.

After you make you data, then proceed with the installation using your favorite FTP program, just make sure to follow up on the READ ME file that came with the files. Up;oad all the files as it came with in order and make sure to double check that no files have been left behind, otherwise an error will occur.

Once everything are uploaded, then you just need to type in your domain name and an installer will appear. Follow what it says. Type the database you've just created using the phpmyadmin and that's really about it.

I'm sure once you try it you'll know it is that easy. If you come in with some problem, don't hessitate to drop-on by here and let us know.

    Have fun:)

Yer that caught my eye as well... directories aren't exactly the best solution for traffic clicks. The majority of visitors are other webmaster looking to get the site listed. PR is really the main consideration for the majority of directories (unless you run one of the popular ones) so i doubt you'll get many clicks if at all.

    1. There many answers to this question, but in the end, it will be up to you to work with your directory and learn and make it better. Using any script "out of the box" with no modification or template changes is usually not going to produce good results. So plan on learning and improving your site over time. We will help you in this process over on the phpLD forums.
    2. Should you have any trouble, we will help.
    3. Very minimal for the first few months. I would be surprised if you passed 50 MB.

Whatever you choose, best wishes. :)

    1. for free scripts i would choose OpenLD, paid scripts i like phpLD V3
    2. nope, all scripts usually come with install instructions, the hardest bit for new comers is setting up the require database.
    3. less than 100mb space is required.

If you know html then why not build one using it, I have done it with both index-it.net and webbieo.com. Although it is a pain in the neck to do and may take a little time you feel alot better about yourself in the end. I think there are to many phpld directories out there, the market is flooded with them. So if you know the coding then go for it and be a little different from everyone else.

I have never used any of these scripts so I do not know how they work, but if you find that it is easier to build a directory using one then go for it, but I still think html works better, both in terms of getting pages indexed faster and crawled deeper, plus pr seems flow a little better in html format.

    Just my 1 cent though.

Setting up a directory is easy, but they typically aren't the best revenue generators from AdSense. My directory was free for a while and got a ton of traffic, and I had well blended AdSense, but barely got any clicks.

phpLD is reccomended: currently what vbulletin is for forum software, phpld is for link directory scripts. (having a community behind it is very important! Community at least means ready plugins and free help.)

HTML? That's crazy talk. Php/Mysql or ASP would work, but you'd be making a lot of pointless work for yourself by building a directory without serving dynamic pages.

Everyone that I know thinks that phpLD is the easiest. Another popular one is eSyndiCat.
