Directory Owners Beware

Think your getting loads of recip links to your nice new directory?
    Do you actually check them?

well more and more im noticing my link being added on link pages and think yay another link ive got, but i then go to the homepage to review it and there is no links pointing to the links page, which means the links page will never get indexed and is about as good to you as a bank with no money in.

This is mainly a warning to directories that gives special placement to link partners, or give them quicker review times (like myself).

Yea either that or a page on some geocities link page with 4,000 other links on it and no PR.

How do you check that? With some kind of link checker or manually?

Well, i never ask reciprocal, as a must (i did have some tryouts, but never really liked the ideea). I always let the webmaster decide. And some go way beyond that, helping you with site-wides and so on.

I even got one PR7 link (partner page or friends page i think) from a .edu website, that was submited in my Webxperience! .

Now these are some treats. :)

For the guys that really think reciprocal is a must, you could manually check all of those reciprocal pages.

And you also could ask casino/money making/xxx/pharmacy etc. website owners (if you accept such websites) to put a rel=nofollow in the link.

Love it when it's not indexed, oh and no link to it so it will never be indexed...

I just decline their link but instead link to their page with all the outgoing links they forgot to show to search engines.:D

it's about 10 lines of perl or php code to write a basic app that would check all your recip links.

Hey don't give people ideas! Do websites auto-check links ever? Or do most do one time checks?

Ya but directory owners should make manually approvence for submission so no one get auto listed.

You can check to see that their recipricol link is active before accepting their link to your directory, but after that it's in the air.

I personally don't bother with recpricol links. If someone wants to link to my directory, great - if not then it's no big deal since we're seeing the value of recip links deminish....

Yes, I think it is an important issue when reciprocals are important to you. I'll be working one ways to make periodic checks that automatically email the owner when the link longer appears (or at least semi-automatically...because sometimes it is good to do a visual check before emailing somebody).

You could also pretty easily modify your existing directory to link to not only the page they submit, but the page where the reciprical link is located just to make sure they SEs pick up on it.
I use PHP LD and there's even a mod out there for just such a purpose.
