Most of you probably know AvivaDirectory, a well ranked web directory, that was penalized by Google. I would like to share to you the full story of AvivaDirectory which is a confession from the directory owner himself. I really learned a lot from this article; their mistakes, why the penalty and what did they do to recover and much more. You will also find important things you should know to promote your directory to avoid being penalized. Matt Cutts from Google is also featured and some of his articles are linked and presented. That story is oooooooooooold news buddy. It was published February 25th, 2008 Although I agree, that many around here need to read it. Edit: And by that I mean that it is an informative blog post...I am not trying to be a jerk
I don't really care for PageRank but Aviva's current PR is 3! You should use a PR checker that actually works What do you mean by PR penalty? That Aviva has lost its past PR? It could happen to any Web site! The penalty is when you do not rank for your own name and like Jeff said that Aviva was perhaps the only directory to be able to reverse it(...)
Good morning guys, that's a way old story but very well put by Jeff. Aviva has a brilliant and hard working owner thus its survived all the penalties.
Its little wonder the directory section is on its knees, same old posts and same old questions. Thanks Brian
They still don't offer the free links options which makes them a good example of a link selling website. For this reason i think they will get a PR0 at some point, forever.
Blogger2006, read from 2007 onwards, then you will understand a bit better the situation. Currently i dont feel that you quite understand the directory business situation.
Aviva made mistakes like many of us but I doff my cap to Jeff for his hard work and integrity to maintain his directory as a quality resource. I remember when he removed and reimbursed a lot of directories from his site (including 2 or 3 of mine) because he realised he hadn't been editing that category as stringently as he could of. It must of cost him $1000's and upset many people (including me), but he made the right call and I respect him for it.
