Directory list, worth the cost?

Looks like after all the Google penalties, most of us or just me are struggling to get sales :(. Perhaps if the directory was promoted in banners, e-mails etc rather than links, the sales rate may increase. I believe the best results I got so far are from directory lists such as directorycritic, paid directory list etc.

Being on that topic, I believe iwebtool has opened a directory catalog. To submit your directory on there it's free (if your directory is non-profit :() or a cost of 49 dollars. Directory critic on the other hand looks good but they require you to link back to them; recently I believe they charge now

Anyway, just would like your views on banner advertising, especially on directory lists and the response you get, if you care to share that is. Thanks

I don't know where you have been, but sites on the internet aren't big just because of links, banner ads, site reviews, free resources work too. As for directory lists being listed on free ones when your directory is paid doesn't really help your sales, might get 1 or 2 hits daily but no sales.

iWebTool has created a directory list. I even blogged it on Lobo Links and I joined also to give it a further review.

Text links were never a big source of traffic. Indirectly, yes, they help you in SERP and search engine traffic and that has not changed. Most sites that have had their page ranks drop are reporting no change in SERP and search engine traffic so the net effect may just be cosmetic and intended to quell the growing pay for page rank campaigns that have become popular.

With all directory (and other websites) dropping in page rank the playing field looks like it will remainf fairly level.

I myself have always used banner ads as one of many ways to drive traffic. I got 3 quality promo banners done and paid good money to get them on webmaster forums and sites like 110mb.com

It works but can be quite expensive. I also tried adwords - it sent good traffic but didnt convert.
