What is your preferred approach when listing categories on the directory home page?

While the majority of directories seem to list a few sub-categories under each of the main directory sections I see some that list all sub-categories, and others that just have a brief description.

I'm interested in the group's thoughts on the pros and cons of each approach.

Any particular reason you feel this is the superior option? I imagine the main reason for choosing any will be SEO-related, but I’m not sure what would make any one significantly preferable to the others.
