Directory Hell

As the 'directory industry' rapidly descends into hell I thought it would be a good time to poll directory owners to find out what they really think about runnning directories.

It is really easy to set up a cookie cutter directory, the hard work comes when you have to religiously vet your submissions. How do you handle this? Do you feel overwhelmed.

In my experience the more general the directory is the more of a problem it is to maintain. You get lots of submissions but they are of low quality. Does pharmacy, property, directory ring any bells.

If you start a niche directory it is harder to get submissions and your directory grows at a slower rate but the quality of submissions is higher.

    My biggest bug bears are:

+ I find I reject a large amount of sites that are submitted due to poor quality.

+ People never read the guidelines

+ Forms are not completed correctly

+ Automated submissions are hell, you get just poor quality sites and lots of them.

    What is your take?

Cookie cutters QBC's are not considered a part of the directory market they will either die off or close in the fullness of time

Paid quality directories are for the present and future market and in the majority they are well maintained and supported by their respective owners

We invariably submit to paid directories secure in the 'comfort zone' that we will get a ROI on our Paid Listing :)

It really is that simple you get what you pay for :D
