Bit of market research... before submitting to a directory most submitters will conduct their own research about said directory. Excluding the most comon factors (Page Rank, Page Strength, Alexa, Price, Owner Reputation) is there anything else you look for before clicking that payment button? Maybe you have a specific web based tool you like to run a site through before submitting, such as iwebtool.com, linkvendor.com or marketleap.com and have a predetermined score / value that the directory must meet?
for me, the most impt thing is quality of backlinks... of course there are alot of other factors, but I put this as one of the most impt for directory submission
- PR of the page I will submit to - number of outgoing links is very important - sitewide links are a turn off to me - Price - How the directory ranks for non webmaster related terms.
I also look at design of directory. If a paid directory is using free template with tons of sponsored links i normally don't submit in it.. Saad
My major concerns are Main Page PR Traffic Stats (Alexa) Strength of a site (U kno SE rankings) Owner (how well does he / she promotes the site) Design (How it looks) Deep Links Pr of the page i will be listed in Potential (My judgement)
With the present market climate reluctantly I have to say the single most important factor is the Directory Owner Hope this will change rapidly to when other factors can be taken into consideration Because the evaluation facts are very significant but without a worthy owner with trust dedication and focus Directories can soon fall back into oblivion
Well said Pete. If the owner is doing the right thing for his directory, all other factors are going to improve with time. PR/PS/Alexa Rank and everything else is a continuous factor & will keep improving with time if the owner is serious with his directory.
I opened 2 threads some time ago, asking the same question. It's interesting that more people looked at PR a lot back then, but it seems to be the directory owners' reputation seems more important now. Check those old threads of mine. PR, Alexa, PS, Price, What else? What makes you want to buy a link? This is the reason I thought I would create the list (I'm building the survey now)
I look at the PR of the page I am submitting the link to and how many pages are indexed with the site: command (most especially to see if the page my link will be on is even indexed!).
Pete, do you beleive this is the case for submitters who don't own a directory themselves? e.g. just the general Joe Bloggs trying to promote his / her site? Thanks for the links, some interesting comments. I am working on something hence the question and picked up a few ideas from the threads and the responses here.... Yes I have seen a few people mention that they do this, do you have a set of generic non webmaster related terms that you use, or do you use terms which are relevant to the site you intend to submit, e.g. golf terms for a golf related web site? How do you gauge this? Based on the number of non-directory submissions? Does the WBM still actually update? For example Google hasn't been captured at all this year, the last entry was September 2006. You mean the quality of the links which are leading to the directory? Thanks for all of your replies.
First the old of the directory, then the owner of the directory, and the the service the directory offers, last the other factors of the directory.
Yes most people were looking at PR so the fraudsters figured out how to manipulate that by using dropped domains so now people are being more careful.
I will look at following: Domain name (is it suitable for a directory) Domain registration and expiry date Template on the site Pages indexed in google PS & PR Promotion ..... Cheers!
I have been doing my own stupid research on directories for the lasr 5 months and have a good list of them. But when I go to my CPANEL -I see that --some people have either checked me on PR prediction or link check up with iwebtool
