Because 40 directory sites is nothing.. Try 4000 directory sites and you might see some help..

it's normal as all the traffic is targeted.
try advertising on other related sites if you want more traffic.

Try to submit in 10-20 directories every day, but also try to get some links from other places (like blog comments, forum signature, and the most important editorial links). Did you use the proper anchor? Is your site interesting?
Just submiting in a few directories woun't help you to much :)
Also try to do some 3-4 ways links exchange with related websites.

Hope this post will help you :)

That's hardly enough to get anything. I don't think directory submission can bring you much traffic (it's the niche directories that can be helpful), you need to do much more, as suggested above.

Are the web directories quite new? that may be a contributing factor too.

You should use as anchor a keyword from your website.

According to my opinion you have to check the directories' sub pages (categories) where you submitted your site. Check the Google Cache Status of exact URL path where your link is up inside a directory. Is it cached or not?

Submit to more high PR directories and also try blog commenting. Check the quality of the sites you submit to.

DMOZ is not the right choice for getting satisfactory result through the website. Their are many other source for increasing the traffic for the site.

With regards link submission its true that it takes time for the back link to appear.
Submitting in higher PR directories like aviva, ezilon, botw etc can get us quicker links, usually within 2-6 months.
I am not sure about paid directories.Perhaps we could get even quicker links from them.
