    Ok...

I'm starting a directory... Not a cheap wanna-be like the one in my signature :)

I'd like to find a good category structure for it, anyone want to give me permission to take some ideas from their directory? Thanks

Look to the more prominent directories for inspiration; Yahoo, dmoz, Business.com, etc when creating your category structure. dmoz has some value after all. ;)

Yes, try and follow the most prominent directories out there. Deciding a directory structure for your web directory can really be a time consuming task.

No, because the best idea is to make it as unique as possible. Although at the same time, you will want to look to large, established directories to get a good idea of which categories attract the most submissions.

Uniqueness can mean giving a different name to what is essentially the same category: for example, you could have a top category "Business", or use the word "Commerce" or "Commercial" instead. Ideally, however, you should look to having a slightly different structure to other directories as well. Regional listings are a good example: many directories categorise regional listings by Continent > Country > District > Town, or something similar. As a result, a lot of the individual category pages end up as duplicates, because there will be the same websites, and often the same descriptions for these websites, within. Instead, consider using a category structure such as Continent > Country > District > Topic, or Continent > Country > Topic > Subtopic. The more thought you put into this, the less you will be affected by duplicate content problems.
