With response rate to link exchange being soooo low...

Has anyone tried to set up a directory on a diff domain as an adjunct to a website, and then invite webmasters to the dir, and ask for a reciprocal to the main site?

Would that drastically increase responses? I would think it would, but like to hear your experience.

I have some very active directories getting up to 100 submissions a day. I tried to build links by having them link to another site of mine but the problem is that spammers is placing your nice link in porn sites and other bad neighbourhood and so it is a bit risky doing that. Even if you delete their link it is not easy to have them delete yours ...

I originally created phpLD to help me exchange links with other sites.
