Is there a way to tell if directory, article or social bookmarking submission was done manually or automatically?

    Thanks.

I think you can check the listing to confirm whether it has been listed in proper category and the tagging are appropriate.

If you see only phpld / iEntry type of directories in web directory submission service, high chances that it's being done automatic/semi-automatically.

Same for article directories, most automatic service providers would submit to article dashboard based directories, some can even give you screenshot of the page (their software uses IE object to render the page), in this case you won't get screenshot of the whole browser but just the rendered page.

If people are ready to work on your list for the same price, you should be more confident that they are providing manual service.

Manual submission is still the best, not only can you customize the content you are submitting but you can further choose available options if there is one.

sometime you can and sometimes you cannot. some semi-automated submissions can be customized so much that it can just look and work the same as manual submissions.
