Directory and Search Engine

What is the major difference between Web Directory and Search Engine ?

Well there are many differences between Web Directory and Search Engine but the major difference from my concerned is that search result are limited to its category in Web directory means the search is limited to what resides in Web directories database, also web directories don't have there own spiders to crawl other sites and Search engine have web crawler and huge database.

In search engines you can find info on explosives, child porn, filth, credit card fraud info, snuff, propaganda.

Ive yet to see the above in a web directory.

But as you can see with search engines they do have literally everything, theres obviously many benefits from using a search engine.

But search engines and web directories have different uses, i dont look for anythingin a web directory, or if i do its maybe when comparing web hosts or something similar.

 

unlike search engines, the content at web directories is selected and limited.

 

Search engines found all pages mostly and Web directory just showing results of those page which we were submitted ago.
In some Web directory we have to pay to add our site in its database While Search Engine is Free..

 

directories doesn't crawl the web. big or small, they are websites.
