Directories work always. But you need to submit on high PR and good quality directories. Only one or two directories can't increase your rankings. There are lot of submissions needed to achieve a satisfactory ranking.

 

Here's an experiment I did with a site where the only link building I did was with web directories. Long story short, yes they work.

I believe that the most important aspect is submitting to directories that are closely related to your niche. Free, Pair or whatever, a close relation results in PR and also traffic.

Yes Directories Work Great If Following Conditions are Ture !

1. Directory in Unique (Not Same as Other Directories)
2. Directory is More than 2/3 Year Old
3. Hosted On Unique IP
4. Have All Directory Pages Indexed In Google (Specially The Page Where You Going to Submit Your Website), You Can Check it Easily With Couple Of Tools
5. Directory Have Less then 30 Outbound Links On A Page
6. Directory Pages Not Containing A lot of ads
7. All Pages Are Static Not dynamic
8. Finally Directory is Alteast of 2 PR

Yes they do work, but I suggest that you do not submit to a large number of directories at once. Do submissions to a few at regular intervals.
