What is your reaction when a directory contains too many third party ads or banners.

Is it something that tells you to avoid such a directory?

Do you quickly close the browser window or check out the directory.

If your going to pay for a listing then probably better to avoid ones with loads of sold ads.

    I would.

What is? I don't see a directory listed.

Yes too many ads are a turn-off including site-wide text link ads.

To me there's not a set answer though if the percentage of the page taken up by ads exceeds the non-navigation menu content, it's a definite pass for me.

definitely a negative sign, banners and Adsense don't really make any money so if a directory puts them up you can be sure its not making much money from submissions.

Too many 3rd party ads or banners or improperly placed adsense have always been a turn off for me. It's a sign that the directory is struggling for some revenue...and compromising standards and ethics.

Paid / premium directories make money with the submissions, how will free directories make money? They need those advertisements to make money.

Most good directories have both paid (featured) and free (regular) listings.
