I'm very new to SEO tactics and promoting my website, so could someone explain what the purpose of submitting to a directory is? Or, for that matter, submitting to the 1500 listed directories? And, does what more do I get for paying $5 or $15 to add my site? It reminds me of those places that will you can submit your site to "6,000 search engines"- a practice (I'm told) is pretty much useless when it comes to actually promoting a site. And, But, like I said, I'm very new to this game and would like to know more. Also- I noticed that just about everyone of the directories has the option of a payment or a reciprocal link. I'd really be more than happy to place a reciprocal link, but where should I put it? My site is a fan-site for the New Orleans Saints, so links to web-directories on the main page would very very inappropriate. Would you owners of these directories mind a link placed somewhere else on my site? Like say, on a page with other sport related sites?
I would submit to a few good ones and rather use the paid directories. I mean the good paid directories which have a presence in Google themselves.

My suggestion is to submit to MANY of the free one and only to good Paid Directory i.e. well known and good PR.
