Directories: The Law of Many , Success Of Few

I have been checking out the Directory section for some time submitting to free directories and now thinking of buying spots in directories. One thing I have been noticing is everyday someone has a new directory to promote. In my mind I'm like cool, free links but after submitting to many of these directories over the past year, I have come to certain conclusions

#1 Many people view the directory game as a quick buck, hence the over saturation of the market.

#2 As with anything that offers the "perception" of easy money (Mesetholmia or however it is spelt) People go into it hoping to do the least work to make the most money

#2b You have PR0 Directories charging $10 based on the possible PR in the future. i look on directories like these and wonder

#3 The said people above directories suck and in a couple months they either abandon the directories and a new crop of directory hopefuls come along hoping to hit it big and hence the cycle continues.

#4 There are the few directory owners who treat their directory like their baby and it is seen in the quality of their product. They become industry leaders because their product stands out in a sea of many subpar directories.

I dont have a directory or dont plan on getting one in the future, but I can see why people set them up, because people like me are willing to spend our hard earned money. That said I think some people need to spend more time on their product and develop it to the true potential. Everyone wont do it so the cycle will continue.

Now I need to find good quality directories that will give me good value for my money. I can go with the people who spend the time and treat their directories properly, because I know in 6 months time I wont be seeing a GoDaddy parked domain page....so guys who know the deal keep it up

after all of this, I will beg for free links into anyones directory (proper ones not fly by night) who feels this post was somewhat semi worthy :D:D:D: (it does not hurt to try)

Nice post, it is good that someone like you, a user as opposed to an owner is noticing things like:

Just like any other business niche there will be good owners and bad owners. Find the good ones and stick with them.

Easy things to look for when considering submitting to a directory.

-Look for custom or customized templates, it means the directory owner has at least invested a few bucks and put some thought into their project.
-Look for directories that offer extra value, deep links, other nice mods and content.
-Check yahoo backlinks to see if they are well indexed, if a site is actively building links you will get more value for your investment.

I am not giving ya any FREE links:p though I agree with your post and experience 100%

Instead I am giving you a list of directories which have been online for many years and will stay there for long. All these directories have been given the much coveted Authority Status by Google. So if you trust Google --you can certainly trust these directories.

    Enjoy --

PS: If you think my list helped ya --submit to the directory where you have this list:D

Well said JDeeze! If you are just starting out in paid directories look for some that have high page strength and low cost. There are some great deals to be had.

Good post, I often visit this section now also because Duality told me to. But besides that, I didn't think Directories are so popular, perhaps more popular than websites.

    Thanks for the post.

I own 1 directory, not really going anywhere, and I don't think it's worth putting that much effort into it, because there are so many. Good points :)
