Directories that drop "permanent links" later - anyone notice this?

    Hi everyone,

I was looking back to check links we submitted to various free and paid directories in the past year, and we noticed that links we had submitted, and were approved and added to the directory, are no longer listed many months later. We have now found this with several directories.

We keep very organized records about our link submissions and physically check that they were added after we receive a confirmation (or if we don't), so it may be these directories are dropping links they agreed would be "permanent" in an unfair manner.

We are currently contacting these directories however we want to know if anyone else has experienced this?

Perhaps if they are indeed dropping links in an unfair manner, we can begin to make a list of these directories (we will but only after we check with the directory owners - maybe they have a legit reason)...

Did you pay for those links to be perminant? If you did, then it would be illegal for them not to keep you forever since that's the service you paid for. However, if you didn't pay for them then I guess its completely up to the owner of the website.

Yes for at least one of these directories we did pay, and another is very likely (unfortunately we didn't record this aspect and we submitted to this directory when it was new).

I would say though even for those we didn't pay for - we should list these free directories because people like myself don't want to waste time submitting info to a directory offering a permanent free link only to find its taken down several months later...

Most of the new directories are likely to die in a short while, too much work to keep them current. I pretty much submit an forget. It takes too much time to go back and keep checking and there is nothing you can do about it if they did drop you.

You can submit to directories pretty quick so it is still worth the effort for the ones that do keep you on.

Being paid doesn't really change anything, if they are flaky you can threighten them all you want, nothing will happen. :(
When I'm in a directory again submitting another site, I will often check if they are keeping sites, if not I drop them from my list and move on.

Don't forgot data loss and database corruption...I've seen several posts about directory owners accidently erasing files and data while trying to update/implement different parts of their directory. Honestly, I think this is bad business to not have backups but not everyone does.

If it was a paid listing I would follow up (Paid listings don't always guarrantee approval though!), if it was a free listing I would just resubmit and keep going.
