Google and probably other engines consider links that replace the site you're at, of higher value than those that open in new windows, as has been discussed here (I believe) and some other forums. Name any directories you know that don't use target="_blank" for links. http://www.uncoverthenet.com/ http://www.addyourlink.org/ http://www.directlinks.us/ http://www.avivadirectory.com/ http://www.forplex.com/
Here are a few more http://www.dirspace.com http://www.webotopia.org http://www.thisisouryear.com http://www.octopedia.com www.joeant.com www.goguides.org www.seoma.net www.umdum.com www.apahcinc.org http://www.kwikgoblin.com http://www.sevenseek.com
The thing that brought it to my attention that this was possible was I did a backlink check (link:www.xyz.com) for some of my clients, and the first links that were showing up didn't use target=blank. Maybe it was just a coincidence, but after searching the web, there is some speculation that it might be true. Try it on your site and see what the first few backlinks are (I only tested it on 3 of my clients' domains.)
I tried with my sites. Those backlinks that show up the first in my case indeed do not contain _blank. But could it be the case that people do not tend to bother putting additional target field into their backlinks (unless that's being done automatically like in directories), so that's just coincidence? Anyway, it's hard to tell unless there is more conclusive evidence...
Links no longer open in new windows at eWebPages Internet Directory. Until there's a better determination of whether or not target="_blank" is a weighted factor or not, we won't be opening links in a new window. Thanks - this is something we'll research as well.
I can tell you right now that it does not matter if the page opens in a new window or not. If google think the link is important then they will count it. I have google backlinks from sites that use the target feature and it has not made a difference.
The issue here is whether or not those backlinks with target attribute would have lower weight than plain backlinks, assuming other factors are equal. They are not saying that those with target attribute will not be counted as backlinks.
Exactly. If the link isn't important enough to take the place of the originating site, then maybe Google will factor that into's it "importance factor".
I do not see how it would matter if it is a target link or not, from what I can tell the only reason these links are used is so that visitors do not leave your site. I think the search engines see these as the same, no need to put more weight on one or the other what would be the point in that.
lol, why do you care? target="_blank" relate to accessibility content and not SEO, there are tons of website out there that open links in another window, think google penalize them?? No way. We don't learn SEO at school dude. Im sure more than 50% of the website on the web opens links in a new window and never got penalized whatsoever. I prefer links that doesn't open in a new window because it doesn't bug my firefox or IE. And if you're so concerned about it, why not listing sites that use target="_blank" ??
More unfounded speculation. Some sites have DP posts that show up first, with links opening in a seperate window.
