They don't state all directories as spam but I'd say the majority of directories don't add any value to visitors in which case Google won't value them either. Jack
But I wonder, why people keep on wanting to submit their website to directories. And, if directories is a good idea to develop a domain when u dont really have the time to develop it.
I'd also like to know that I think most people believe that it's how many links you have when in reality it's the quality of the links. If you're starting a new site you could also add the link to your current signature here to start? Jack
I dont have new websites, just wondering around. And if it's good, I would like to turn one of my unused domain into a directory
Google's algorithm is based mostly on links. The more links you get, from different types of sites the better.
Yeah and you need both quantity and quality of links but links from directory are trashy but they won't be banned i think for spam reason
I'd disagree, while it is about backlinks it's not about how many you can get. It's more about the quality of the links. If you got 10 quality links from high PR websites than contain little links to other sites I wouldn't be surprised if it had a more positive impact on a website than 100 directory links.
I'm finding more and more that it's quality over quantity of links for google.. While submitting to directories can help SLIGHTLY, it's not going to be enough for most niches..
Not that I know of. We've been well indexed in Google for over 5 years now and have never had an issue or been classified as "spam". Duplicate content gets banned though. And there are a lot of directories out there that are just copies of other directories all using the same info/db. Keep your content unique and relevant, and you should not have any issues.
I don't disagree with you. Quality is very important but a site with no links will rarely rank in Google. Organic links are by far the best but not every site can get them easily.
Link is a link is a link no matter where it comes from. At least you can show me where Google is saying that linking is bad for your site you have no argument to present. Google is counting every link, even no-follow links, and then make calculations based on 200 or so different factors where to place site in SERP and PR and for you to say what Google does or doesn't is just hot air out from your mouth. ;rolleyes: fastreplies
Directories are treated just like any other site by google. Look for directories that are well edited in your niche and get a link from them it'll help your site.
Previously I seldom visit a website, where people post their products for free. So it is considered as a product directory, but the site is already banned by google. The owner is my friend and he said google detect the directory as spam.
A directory is no different from any other site. Create a useless bunch of junk and it will be worthless. A well-run directory can get page rank just like any other website. A well-run directory can send traffic to the listed sites. And, a well-run directory is great for SEO purposes as it provides a topical link to your site. Using black hat or other tactics will eventually get a site banned; doesn't matter if it's a directory or Wikipedia. As to what makes a well-run directory, there's plenty of threads here which talk about that, including one of the stickies. Learn the difference between a well-run directory and a "link farm" and you'll understand the concept better.
Read what MIA has to say, and read it slow and comprehend. You build a directory that is a freaking carbon copy of another domain, of course google will leave you alone and not bother polluting the SERP's with your directory. You build a directory and accept every damn link? The spammy ones. the dead ones (surprising how many dead links get submitted and approved to directories, because no one checks for accuracy), the carbon copy review sites, article sites, and more? Google is going to say, man this directory is crap because it only contains crap. Why I never accepted spammy sites, review sites, MFA sites, and other crap sites in a directory. And will not accept such in my new blog directory (just today, 36 submissions, 1 accepted!).
