Directories Fake Or Real?

    There is alot of talk about online directories. Are there really 500 or more online directories? If yes, how many of those are for real in content? What do you look for when submitting your website? This is just for open discussion. I am always seeing members selling submission to 1000s of directories.

    99% are crap. The best have lots of unique content and are fully developed before being announced. They have something that many internet users want to read rather than just a submit page for a webmaster.

    I look for a directory with content, thats strong itself in terms of traffic and backlinks. They must also have tight editorial integrity, i dont want to be listed in spam city.

    There are thousands of directories in the english language alone, check out other countries/languages and you will find many thousands more.

    It depends by what you mean of "for real in content"

    A good directory shouldn't be filled with filler content though, from listings to an article or something else.

    I would class filler as a Britney Spears song, and quality content as a Led Zeppelin Track or Black Sabbath maybe.

    Some directories have plenty of content, but its not that great, its filler.

    Why the examples above?

    Well Britney just lost her kids, but Zeppelin have just made a comeback. :)

    Content that ages well may be more useful.

    I think the difference between a good directory and a bad one is good directories actually have surfers that want to be there. Bad ones just have spiders, then google punishes them, and they blame selling backlinks for it, rather then their site serving absolutely no purpose to anyone except webmasters.

    Unfortunately, many web directories are there just for webmasters and provide no real benefit to anyone else. The best directories actually come up on the first few pages of the search engines for their content. Also there are some niche directories that have a small community following of repeat visitors and provide value.
