I want to get SEO for my site but I want to know whether there is actually any point in submitting it to 100s of random directories?

Well directories are not the best source of backlinks but a link is a link and has some value :) You can get PR1/2 with these backlinks.

For non-competitive keywords directory submissions will be good enough to get into search results. But as you go towards 'harder to optimize for' keywords you will have to go for other forms of link development too.

Directory submissions has some value though the value is very small nowadays. :)

OK, thankyou, so there is no harm in directory submitting?

I thought google might discriminate against my site for submitting to millions of directories.

Directories are perfect for me and my non directory sites.

Ask yourself this, what other choices do you have for quick backlinks?

backlinks are always beneficial for you it does not matter that from where they come, and backlinks will not hurt your ranking in any condition because links are coming from there not you are giving to him :)

Directories submission generally an effective way of one way links and traffics. :)

    Thanks

Directories are one method of one way link building. Webmasters for years have used them and found them to be effective. Others have said they haven't helped at all.

Directory submissions won't throw your site onto the first page in Google, unless its for a search keyword with little competition. It needs to be done as part of other long term on-going SEO work and other link building efforts.

if you aren't worried about untargeted traffic going to your site, then submit away. Just so long as you know you're contact details will be sold on and as a consequence you'll get a ton of spam. But that's okay, because you get a one-way link in return for all that hassle.

Personally, give general directories a wide birth - you will get stung one way or another my friend. I've been there and done it - infact I've got the tee-shirt...

Directories give you the ability to tailor your link text and target specific pages on your site. Links you get from other people often don't pick the keywords that I'd prefer.

Don't submit randomly if you can help it. There are lots of bad neighbourhoods where there are thousands of directories in lists. Use the lists wisely, you'll see where the patterns are formed, try and avoid them if you can. Forget what some people say, directories can be a useful tool for any site depending on what you want to achieve.

    Good luck.
