I just checked my stats and found, over the past four days, about 40 visits directly attributable to directory listings. Extrapolating = 10/day X 30 days = 300 visitors per month from directory listings. My conclusion? At least in my case, directories do drive traffic. BTW, the results included some directories owned byDPers. Although it's only 1% of our traffic, those 300 visitors per month are still significant numbers.
yup, they do drive in traffic, everyone looks into bigger directories like aviva alive etc. I was checking some stats in my niche directory & i see quite a large # of hits for lot of websites in it. Anyway you can let us know the directory name which drove in the traffic?
If you read his post it says from directory listings and some directories from DP members. So he is talking about many different directories.
Correct. I stopped counting at ten directories. Interestingly, the best single one was a "niche" Christian directory with 25% of the total directory traffic for that 4-day test period.
Thanks for driving home the truth. These days I can see many people degrading the value of directories --but perhaps they do not check their stats like you do Greens all the way for ya.
Appreciated. And not only are the directories sending a modest amount of traffic directly, there is also the PR boost that comes to us from the backlinks. That in turn (despite some naysayers stuck in the myth that "PR is useless") does factor into the SERPs, which in turn effectively bring in more traffic. So directory listings have both a direct and an indirect (PR) positive influence on traffic.
yeah .. .u kno when i make templates or have special offers, i put my listing's detail page on the page and people who read click on it ... thats another way you can get traffic .... but its good that you are getting some traffic
Yes I also get some good traffic from directories. That is why I started my first directories. Big directories like aviva for example will play an important place in the future I think.
Can you let me know which directories? I'd be interested in knowing which general directories are sending you a bit of traffic. If you would PM me the list it would be much appreciated. If you'd rather not, no problem.
CReed, no problem going public. I discarded the list. But taking a quick second look at my StatCounter, I see (over the last four days) traffic from these directories: • 11 visits from sermonlinks.com (Christian directory) • 5 from 2yi.net • 5 from trincas.org • 3 from domaining.in • 3 from spiritfind.net (Christian directory) • 3 from dirspace.com • and a handful of 2's and 1's
Thats cool, what was the average pageviews per user? If the traffic wasn't productive its most likely just other webmasters.
Yes, and the traffic-from-directories data should encourage DPers with new websites to be diligent in directory submissions. They can gain some modest traffic there, while their SEO efforts and content writing are building better positions in the search engine results. And I re-emphasize (from my data above) that niche directories can bring some nice, targeted traffic.
Cool which member here on dp owns those listed in his list ? I do not recall any member here owning any of them. So, was curious.
Not sure on how many page views per unique visitor. And the nonprofit nature of the website leaves the question unsolved about how "productive" each visit was.
Your stats program will have pv/s user? I too get lots of directory referrals, however i believe they are 90% webmasters. Of course if you own a directory or related site submitting to directories will bring direct targeted traffic, for anything else it wont just the SE benefits.
i think it is an established fact that directories DO PROVIDE some form of traffic. It's just that in comparison to other more popular sites like BLOGS, tool-sites, etc, it may seem insignificant..... but i believe this will change in time. As directories rise in relevance and compete with directories like Yahoo, google and MSN, they will account for an increasing source of traffic
