Nobody besides big G! knows exactly whats happening.

Google wont kill Dmoz yet, the need a substitude first. Paid G directory, its all about money now.

I've frequented your directory a few times myself :) May have even gotten a buck or two from me...

I've also noticed the following drop from established PR to PR 0:

    www.speedydirectory.com
    www.subjex.net (dropped from 6 to 1)

I have a feeling mine will get hit eventually too. I've been trying to add stuff to it that isn't just a directory though. I have some free templates - shameless plug - (I have a million to add, but I'm lazy -- if anyone knows a cheap data entry person let me know I'll happily pay someone to do it), a counter, some clipart, etc. Stuff like that. The extra content may be helping me a little bit. I keep meaning to run xenu against it to get rid of all the bad links going out. I also think not mirroring DMOZ's structure helps as well.

That doesn't exactly instill confidence in those who are considering or have already purchased your $29.95 premium listings!

How would you make a directory unique? When it boils down to it, they are lists of links.

Google is on a tear right now, what can I say. Since the big hits the past few weeks have come and gone and I'm still there, I could escape it, but there are no guarantees, obviously. Like I said, unlike most directories that are just that, about 6 months ago, I made a concious effort to add more features to it that would make it more sticky. I know the templates gets a lot of traffic (especially considering its not marketed) and its included in all the SE's same with the other stuff.

I also rank top 10 in yahoo for "free web directory", top 15 in MSN for it too. I consider that very nice all around. :)

Just build your own network with your own sites with different IPS for groups of sites and develop a slick linking scheme where relevant sites are linked togetherand have different IPs.

Oh and read on here a lot :)

They didn't have any editorial control over their listings. If you paid via paypal, you were automatically in there. Either linked to a bunch of bad neighborhoods or got busted for, in essence, selling PR.

Zactamundo, give people something new. Otherwise you might as well clone DMOZ ... everyone seems to do it
