Directories aren't really for eveyone....

    They aren't for me.

Let me explain. Some of you might've noticed I've been hanging around this forum for a couple weeks now. I was very very excited to start a directory.
I was actually gonna start two. I searched around and did some research and aquired two premium keyword rich domains. I then started to developed one of the them and spent a good amount of money on it. I actually finished the redesign today and it hit me! I don't like web directories! Nothing against them - they're just not for me.

I have a certain way I do things and to do things - I have to enjoy them. I don't see myself enjoying owning a directory (unless I'm already making mention worthy profits..lol). Usually, when I don't like what I do - I don't do it the best I could... With that said - I'm done. I'm selling webdirectory20.com and submityourlinks.com.

The reason for my post: I see new directories started almost everyday. I'm not sure why they're started but I just like to give some advice to owners. If you're in it for the money - you won't succeed. If you’re not enjoying the site – your project, you won’t succeed. This isn’t proven or anything or course, but its my honest opinion on the subject – especially with my experience.

And it’s because of my experience that I’m selling my sites/domains. I’d hate to do bust my butt off and get nothing in return – even though I’d prolly do half ass job anyway.\

Anyways – let me shut up – it just gets to me, I spent some good time and money on these. But whatever – live and learn right…. If anyone is interested in taking these projects off my hands – check out the sig links.

Sorry to hear it friend but im glad that you didnt just let
them sit around and collect dust and waste the submitters time ;)

To me a web directory is what i like ...

A good web directory can influence the ranking and take a site
to the top of those engines results as well as to me ...
the web directory is in its infancy as much more technology will
soon be coming to allow them to be so much more then what they started as.. ;)

Regardless wish you success in your future..

Contact me on prices for the domains... :)

    thx

Hey at least you can admit it. There are so many people that just create directories thinking that they will go somewhere, but they do not. There is nothing wrong with admitting that owning a directory is not for you!

It sounds like you were hoping for a quick pay-off but realized it would take months and months of work before you turned a profit, and you are right that is not much fun!

Never give up! Wait 2 or 3 years, you probably will think of something new within this time for your directories. It is a challenge, but the benefits are great at the end.

No - actually I realized that before I even started. The deciding factor was - I was no longer interested - I had more fun coding the design then setting it up and thinking of way to monetize it.. iono.. just me... but I wasn't looking for the quick buck...

Good call, it's a very saturated market. If you are serious about it and have a vision for a project maybe purchased an established one. You have to enjoy building to be a SUCCESSFUL directory owner and start from scratch.

Directories generally speaking are not crap, just 80 percent of the directories owned by Digitalpoint members are.

nando i think you have made a very good decision, there is little point in continuing with something if your heart is not in it.

I wish you good success in any other projects your currently working on and any future ideas.

I appreciate your candour. Not everyone is afflicted with an obsessive need to categorise web pages, and that is nothing to worry about.

i guess anyone wld enjoy owning a site that is making money, but it takes time to get there. If that is the case, you will not like any kind of business as you will never be making profits right at the start unless u forked out a huge sum to buy one that is already money-making of course. But that in itself shld also not be the reason for you enjoying the business.

Thus, think u shld re-evaluate how you determine whether you enjoy doing something. Is it purely for the profits or for the long-term satisfaction of seeing it grow and finally making money.
