A problem directory owners have is structuring a directory so it really is SEO friendly. Most directory owners use the words 'SEO friendly' without knowing or fully understanding the concept.

Most certainly directories that do not provide direct links are most certainly SEO unfriendly and in my opinion should be wiped off the face of the earth.

There are however more aspects to SEO than providing a direct link.

The main problem directory owners face is using unique content, this is very difficult, however if you can design a directory using totally unique text, you will certainly benefit in regards to SERPS.

Another aspect where most here struggle is you are using very similar link submissions. I would avoid this like the plague, try and make your own submissions as unique as possible. It is not a keyword stuffing exercise, try and change your submission titles round every month or so.

    Other things to consider.

It is well documented that Google loves unique content, to this end why not consider attaching a blog or an article page to your directory, then of course use it. Never copy work from others, there is simply no point and the penalties can be severe.

Use more anchor text, throughout your directory.

Make sure you have an on page/google sitemap and keep updated regularly.

SEO is a very complicated in depth subject, there are no real experts regardless of what people may tell you. This is due to the secrecy Google employs and the never ending moving of the goal posts. It is possible however to have a good understanding of the basic SEO principles and if these principles are implemented in the correct manner, the results will speak for themselves.

6 months ago we launched our business services website, by understanding and following some basic SEO principles we are ranked around 15 in google for the term 'Business Services' in total there are around 1.7 billion pages. This shows we have a good understanding of SEO, but experts, hell no.

I hope this post is considered helpful to people who do not understand SEO. If anyone would like to discuss the matter further, simply drop me a PM.

    Pete

It seems your concepts on directories are 6 months old-- most directories have moved ahead and are doing great on SERPs.

You say --directories should habe blogs. - I have 40+ of them on one of my directory.

Perhaps you don't know the fact that -

there are a huge number of directory owners whose main online profession is SEO. Directories are just a part of their SEO network.:)

SEO is a very emotive subject, when discussed on threads it usually ends up in arguments, simply because people have differing views on the subject.

I simply posted my own opinion, in the hope it would be of use to members here. I will not be drawn into an argument on the subject. If my knowledge is 6 months out of date, no one has told Google as they view my website positively in a very competitive sector

I have been on many SEO forums in the past. One question I have often raised is, If a person considers themselves an expert in the world of SEO, should their own website not showcase their talents by listing very highly in Google. The answers given were normally that people did not have time to work on their own site, something I still find staggering.

Jhnrang if you actually read my post you will find what I actually said was attaching a blog to a website is one method of adding unique content to a website.

My intention was not to start an argument - but stop one.
DP directory owners are just great SE professionals ( I never said expert) themselves.

Just type anything related to directories on Google bar and hit search --
    Example terms

    Web diretory/Web Directores
    Business Directory/Business Web Directory
    Entertainment Web Directory
    Web Directory Resource

and hundreds of such terms ---you will find that top 100 results are totally dominated by directories owned by regular DP members.

Check www.romow.com , www.gii.in , www.dirjournal.com and see the amount of contents they provide. www.directorydump.com is rocking for every possible keyword/phrase related to directories though Rob is basically a coder and not SEO professional.

Hundreds of unique articles on blogs and article pages.

    Hope you understand my point.
    Regards

Edit: My first impression was that you are trying to get SEO job offers from directory owners.

You may check all my blogs (on blogroll) and posts I have on them. Check out Internet Resource Blog
